Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has praised his team’s “personality” as they became the first English side to win at Atletico Madrid.

The goals came from Alvaro Morata and Michy Batshuayi who showed that the team will cope without Diego Costa. Atletico, playing their first European game in their new stadium, fought hard but Costa, whose return has just been secured, watched from the sides as his old team defeated his new one.
After the game Conte said, “You can win, but if you win only to defend, to go and counter attack there isn’t the right satisfaction. Instead to come here and to show we are ready to play… it’s very important. “We must play always with the same personality, the same desire to play football and to try through the play to deserve to win. The answer tonight was very positive.”
Even Atletico manger Diego Simeone had praise for the visitors, “Chelsea were the better team. The draw was a good result for us, but at the very end they had the patience to move the ball round very well and scored at the last second. We couldn’t really play our game because our rival was better. They had better intensity, they were better at a tactical level. We were never comfortable. It was a fair victory for Chelsea because they just played better.”
After a largely successful week for English teams in Europe, Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was also full of praise for his team saying that while Romelu Lukaku’s scoring was “amazing”, it was only possible thanks to the good team around him.
