Massimiliano Allegri, the Juventus manager, has said that he left Gonzalo Higuain on the bench against Tornio as the striker needs to “rediscover” his calm.

Mario Mandzukic was chosen in place of Higuain for the match and went on to play a key role in Juventus’ 4 – 0 win over their rivals.

Paulo Dybala scored twice and Miralem Pjanic and Alex Sandro scored the other two gaols. However, their lives were made easier when Torino midfielder Daniele Baselli was sent off in the 24th minute for a second yellow card.

After the game Allegri said that Higuain was on the bench as there are many games and he “preferred to give him a rest”. He described Higuain as an “important player” but said that there are times when everyone will be rested “otherwise we won’t be able to maintain our consistency.”

Allegri pointed out that Higuain has already scored twice this season and expects him to score more but said that, “He just needs to rediscover, or perhaps he never lost it, the calm of not feeling the need to score at all costs.”

Allegri also praised the entire team for their efforts that meant that they maintained their perfect start to the season. They are still tied for points with Napoli who are at the top of the league due to goal differential.

“At last we’re starting to run a bit. The lads had a really good game, including the opening 20 minutes, then once Torino went down to 10 men we controlled the match,” Allegri said.

However, he said that the team allowed some situations that they could have avoided and said that they slowed the tempo too much in the second half.

“It wasn’t easy, as this Torino side is tough to beat, but it was the best way to prepare for Wednesday’s Champions League game.”
