After Lionel Messi’s last-minute winner in last weekend’s El Clasico, Barcelona boss Luis Enrique has called him “the best player in history”.
Messi’s 500th Barcelona goal, which threw open the La Liga title race and was scored in the last minute of the match, gave the team a 3 – 2 victory and took them to the top of the table. Real Madrid and Barcelona are now level on 75 points each but Barcelona is on top due to their better head-to-head record.
Nonetheless, Real Madrid have a game in hand with six matches left to play and there is little that Barcelona can do if they go on to win them all.
Speaking to Marca Enrique said, “He is the best player in history, he is incredibly decisive at all times. I have seen a lot of football, it is a great pleasure that he is one of us.”
Real Madrid took the lead in the 28th minute with a goal from Sergio Ramos. However, Barcelona were back level within five minutes when Messi caught Ivan Rakitic’s pass on the edge of the box and finished in style.
Rakitic then put Barcelona ahead once again before Ramos was sent off four minutes later for a two-footed lunge on Messi. It seemed that Real had managed to salvage a point thanks to a goal from substitute James Rodriquez with just five minutes less to play. However, Messi then had the final say of the match.
Enrique continued, “It was a match between two wonderful teams that gave everything to win and in truth either side could have been victorious. “The fact we made it 3-2 in the 92nd minute gives us a huge morale boost. We have defended well throughout the match but we were ready to draw at the end, however that would have been a missed opportunity on our part.”
