Liverpool has successfully completed the signing of defender Ragnar Klavan for an undisclosed sum from Augsburg.
The Estonian international has been brought in as cover at centre-back. Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho and Joe Gomez are both out with injuries at the moment and Tiago Ilori, who is the obvious fall-back option, is doing to the Olympic Games with Portugal.
Klavan has had more than 100 caps for his country and has played in the Bundesliga for four seasons. He told Liverpool’s official website that he is “really honoured to be part of this amazing club, this amazing team.”
He went on to say that it has been a dream of his for the past 22 years to come to the Premier League and specifically Liverpool and as a result he can’t put his feelings into words. Speaking specifically about the Premier League he said that it “is the most attractive league in the world and you always have amazing players here. This is the home of football.”
It is thought that Jurgen Klopp believes that Klavan is the perfect person to provide backup and leadership, much in the same was as Kolo Toure did before he departed earlier this summer.
Klopp has also been in the market for a defender now that Toure is no longer at the club and Sakho is set to miss the start of the next season as he is recovering from an Achilles injury.
Earlier this summer Joel Matip was brought in on a free transfer and he started in last Sunday’s friendly game at Wigan alongside Dejan Lovren. While Matip was replaced towards the end of the match due to a foot problem Klopp has said that he doesn’t expect the injury to disrupt Matip’s pre-season games.
