Kylian Mbappe has revealed that Neymar persistently sent him text messages asking for updates regarding his summer move from Monaco to Paris Saint-Germain.

The two have developed a strong relationship on the pitch, which was apparent during the team’s 4 – 1 victory over Rennes last Saturday.

Speaking to France Football Mbappe, who will celebrate his 19th birthday this week, was looking back on the year that saw him join PSG, enter the top 10 of the publication’s Ballon d’Or award as the youngest ever entrant and then win TF1 Telefoot’s prize for the best young French player.

“It is different with Neymar,” Mbappe said. “He immediately took me under his wing. In fact, he waited for me. Before I arrived late in the transfer window, he would not stop sending me messages [to ask about the move]. ‘When are you getting here?’ I told him: ‘Wait, I am on my way.’ However, as it took a bit of time, I think he was thinking: ‘He lied, he is not coming.’”

Mbappe said that once he arrived Neymar did everything he could to put him at ease. He said that Neymar kept an eye out for him on the pitch and passed to him often which he said “helps you to settle into the dressing room.”

Mbappe also said that winning the Ballon d’Or is something that has crossed his mind, “These are titles that I am aiming for as part of this team. Players who do not win something great for their team do not win the Ballon d’Or.”

The player said that he doesn’t have the best work ethic but that he has loved every minute of his career so far, which he summarised saying, “I am not a hard worker. I just love football”.
