AC Milan have denied reports that new coach Gennaro Guttaso has offered to resign but the team confirmed that the players have been sent to a training camp “until further notice”.

The team, who cancelled their annual Christmas dinner, lost 3 – 0 to Hellas Verona over the weekend and they are currently 14 points below the top four and qualification for next season’s Champions League.

The change of coach has failed to produce any significant improvement with Gattuso picking up just 4 points from his three league games in charge. This includes a draw with Benevento, who have lost all their other 16 games this season.

As a result, AC Milan have cancelled their festive dinner plans and the players will be based at their Milanello training centre for the foreseeable future.

In a Tweet the club said, “AC Milan announce that the team will go on a training retreat from tomorrow until further notice.”

A spokesperson for the club also said that it was “absolutely false” that Gattuso has offered to resign just a few weeks after being promoted from his position in charge of the youth team. The spokesperson added that it was not true that Gattuso was opposed to the training camp and said that the decision was “shared” by the coach and management.

This weekend Milan face Atalanta with both sides on 24 points after 17 games of the season. They are six points behind Sampdoria who, sixth in the table, are currently in the final qualifying position for the Europa Leagued.

However, the team face Inter Milan in the Coppa Italia quarterfinals next week and this could provide them a route into next season’s Europe League.

AC Milan play Ludogorets in the Europa League round of 32 in February and their general manager, Marco Fassone, has suggested that they may need to focus on winning it in order to reach the Champions League next season.
