Florentino Perez, the Real Madrid president, has said that Cristiano Ronaldo is relaxed about his current tax problems and is wholly focused on playing at his best.
In July Ronaldo was in court in Madrid answering charges of a €14.7 million tax fraud. He has consistently maintained his innocence and so far he has refused to do the same as others who face similar charges, such as Lionel Messi, and do a deal with the authorities in order to avoid a custodial prison sentence.
Speaking to El Espanyol Perez said, “Ronaldo is relaxed as he is a person with just one fixation, his profession. Everything else… he has a clear conscience as he has not hidden anything, or done anything wrong. Then he dedicates his body and soul to keep winning Ballons d’Or and The Best prizes, as I believe he will win the next two.”
Ronaldo’s teammate, Gareth Bale, was not shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or and when asked if he was concerned about Bale’s injuries Perez said, “Things happen with players that we do not expect. Kaka came as a phenomenon, a Ballon d’Or. But he went to a World Cup, was given an injection, and returned with his knee destroyed.”
However, he went on to say that he thinks that Bale will make a full comeback and that “we will see the great Gareth again.”
Perez also said that the team considered signing Kylian Mbappe over the summer but that they didn’t really have space on the squad so they thought it was better for him to go to PSG where he will gain more experience.
In regards to the team’s slow start to the season Perez said, “Nobody likes this, but it is impossible to be at your best every week, playing Wednesday and Sunday. It has always happened. Madrid fans are very demanding but we still have things in our own hands in the title race.”
