There are rumours that Manchester United’s full-back Matteo Darmian is being targeted by AS Roma and Napoli.

It has been reported that Darmian is interested in moving back to the Italian league after an inconsistent first season with Manchester United. Jose Mourinho hasn’t been making much use of Darmian instead turning to Antonio Valencia to fill the role and the team also has Timothy Fosu-Mensah to call upon.

Darmian moved to United from Torino last summer after consistently impressing with the Turin club. He began well at United but picked up an injury around Christmas last year and failed to find his best form again for the rest of the season.

He was conspicuous in his absence from Manchester United’s opening game against Bournemouth earlier in the week and this has fuelled the speculation that he is seeking to return to Serie A.

Rather than hanging around uncertain about his first team position at United, Darmian could move to Roma or Napoli where he would be an improvement on either teams’ right-back options.

Furthermore, it is a division that Darmian knows well and has already proved that he can excel playing in it.

If Mourinho was to sell Darmian it would be a huge vote of confidence in Antonio Valencia, especially as many think that he is lacking in the defensive qualities that Darmian brings.

It seems that Napoli is the more likely of the two teams to make an approach to Manchester United. There are reports that they want to see if United would be open to negotiations before approaching the player with their offer.

Darmian has a contract until 2019 with Manchester United but considering he started in just five of the team’s 21 games last season the chances are he would leap at the opportunity to move.
