Giovane Elber, the former Bayern Munich striker, has predicted that Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez will make a success of his time at Bayern but that he will have to work to secure his place in the starting squad.
Rodriguez moved to Bayern on a two-year loan deal and made his debut in a 2 – 0 preseason friendly win against Werder Bremen on Saturday.
However, Elber, who scored 92 league goals for Bayern between 1997 and 2003, has cautioned Rodriguez saying that he will need to be patient again after he was frustrated by limited opportunities in Spain.
Speaking to ESPN FC Elber said, “There’s no guarantee that he will start. No one is guaranteed a starting position at Bayern, apart from maybe [Jurgen] Klinsmann some time ago. Like Real Madrid, there are a lot of stars at Bayern. The coach will just let the best players play.”
However, Elber did concede that Rodriguez will be aided by his familiarity with Carlo Ancelotti who was his manager in his first season at Real Madrid after the 2014 World Cup where he won the Golden Boot with six goals.
Last season Rodriguez made just 22 appearances under Zinedine Zidane and was left out of the team for the Champions League final against Juventus.
“I think he will do very well because he knows Ancelotti from Real Madrid,” Elber said. “At Madrid, he didn’t real have a chance to play. But now he has the opportunity, he should do well, and it will also help the younger players.”
Rodriguez is joining Bayern on their preseason tour of Asia with matches against Arsenal and AC Milan before they play Chelsea and Inter Milan at the International Challenge Cup in Singapore.
Overall Elber adopted an optimistic tone saying, “Just like Real Madrid, the pressure will be there from the start at Bayern. But he can handle that.”
