Brazil international Fabinho has said that he will be leaving Monaco next summer and there are reports of interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid.
Last summer the player said he hoped to move to Manchester United but the team signed Nemanja Matic, it was then expected that he would move to PSG. However, he stayed with Monaco while a number of his teammates left.
Speaking this week he told reporters that the club have given him permission to leave despite his contract running until 2021, “Normally, it’s my last season at Monaco. I don’t think there’s the possibility to leave [before then]. I’ve not had any contact and I haven’t asked to leave in January. I’m calm at Monaco, and I wouldn’t be able to play in the Champions League with another team.”
While Fabinho helped the team win last season’s Ligue 1 title and reach the Champions League semi-finals, he has suffered a drop in form this season. He has scored just two goals and the team has already crashed out of the European competitions.
Fabinho puts it down to disappointment over not leaving, “During the transfer window and even in the month after, it was a difficult situation to handle. I should have left, I didn’t leave.
But I’m not thinking about that any more, the page has been turned. I’m focused on Monaco, but I know I’m not the Fabinho of last season. I’m not in a bad spell, but I’m not back to my best. I’m not able to do the same things as last season.”
He went on to say that no one from Atletico Madrid has approached him or his agent, but that he thinks he needs to prove his worth before major teams will make any approaches.
