Jupp Heynckes’ fourth time in charge of Bayern Munich has begun brilliantly after the team easily defeated Freiburg 5 – 0 over the weekend.

They were given the lead thanks to an own goal from Julian Schuster before Kingsley Coman scored as well as Thiago, Robert Lewandowski and Joshua Kimmich.

Speaking after the match Heynckes said, “Today it was extremely important we got off to a good start. Then you have self-confidence and enjoy a new lease of life. It’s vital to have a clean sheet and use our full potential up front too.”

He went on to say that they allowed Freiburg three chances in the first half and said that in the future that can’t be allowed to happen. However, he praised the team for not allowing any chances in the second half and said that his criticism is “at a very high level, we played some wonderful football at times.”

Heynckes now wants the team to build on the win but cautioned about being overly optimistic. He said that they have a lot of work to do but acknowledged, “we still have a very good team with lots of fantasy but it was especially important that the players cleared their heads. This result happened because of that and was the reason why the team played so attractively today.”

The only downside to the match was the injury to Javi Martinez. He landed on his shoulder and had to be replaced with 20 minutes left to play. He will be having a scan but Heynckes confirmed that there are doubts over whether he will be able to play in Wednesday’s Champions League game against Celtic.

“When Javi says he has to go off that is really alarming,” the manager said. “He is not only a Basque; he is also a robust type of player and a tremendous fighter. He showed that again today.”
