Newly promoted Alaves’ defeat of Barcelona over the weekend left many shocked and now people are busy unravelling what went wrong for the defending champions.

Luis Enrique left his big name players, Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Andres Iniesta, out of the starting eleven but they were all brought on in the second half. Many are saying that Enrique made too many substitutions which prevented the team from finding a good rhythm.

The team was with a new goalkeeper and two full-backs who are not regular, Javier Mascherano and Jeremy Mathieu, and the overall result of this was a team that looked unfamiliar with each other.

Barcelona couldn’t really find a rhythm in the first half and Deyverson gave Alaves a surprise lead in the 39th minute with an excellent finish at the near post after a superb cross from Kika Femenia.

In the second half it looked as if Barcelona were doing better when defender Jeremy Mathieu rose to head a Neymar corner past Fernando Pacheco. A few minutes later it looked as if Mathieu would score a second when the ball bounced his way seven yards out, but his volley went wide of the post.

Then in the 64th minute Ibai Gomez capitalised on a mistake from Mascherano to send the ball past debutant goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen truly shock the world of Spanish football.

As a result Alaves remains unbeaten this season thanks to a 2 – 2 draw with Atletico Madrid on the season’s opening day and a goalless draw with Sporting Gijon in the second week.

The result also means that Barcelona has fallen three points behind their rivals Real Madrid. All eyes will now be on Luis Enrique next week and fans will be expecting to see the big names in the starting XI.
