Mateo Kovacic, the Real Madrid midfielder, has said that his former Inter Milan teammate Mauro Icardi could be a real boost to the team at a time when there is great speculation that they will be looking to bolster their attack in the next transfer window.
Icardi has regularly been mentioned as a potential target for Madrid after he scored 16 goals in 15 games to take Inter to the top of the Serie A table.
Zinedine Zidane’s side have had a relatively poor start to the season in front of goal with fewer goals from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo than expected.
Speaking at a news conference this week Kovacic said, “I am not the one to ask about signing. [But] I played two and a half years with Mauro. He is a very good player who scores many goals, and is having a great season. He could help us a lot. But we have the best centre-forward in the world, which is Karim.”
There has been some discussion over whether Madrid’s disappointing form is the result of the depart of last year’s high quality back-ups James Rodriguez, Alvaro Morata and Pepe and their replacement with youngsters Dani Ceballos, Borja Mayoral and Jesus Vallejo.
However, Kovacic doesn’t believe that the squad is lacking in depth, rather he believes that they must keep “working hard and be ready”.
He also gave his backing to Ronaldo despite the player having scored just two goals in ten La Liga games so far.
“He is the best player in the world. He has scored many goals in the past and will again in the future. At the moment the ball does not want to go in, but the season is long and he will score many goals for sure.”
