Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus has encouraged his former club to make a move for the Borussia Dortmund winger Christian Pulisic.
During Saturday’s match, U.S. international Pulisic was easily Dortmund’s best player in what was overall a disappointing performance from the team. Following the 3 – 1 home defeat Pulisic was specifically praised by sporting director Michael Zorc, who said that he was the only player to show “courage”, and by coach Peter Bosz.
Pulisic, who is just 19 years old, is under contract until 2020 but speaking over the weekend Matthaus said that Bayern should target the player when they look for replacements for Arjen Robber, who is 33, and Franck Ribery, who is 34.
Speaking to Sky Sports Matthaus said, “Whenever Bayern are looking to replace Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery, they must put out feelers to Christian Pulisic.”
In the last few years the German champions have signed a number of key Dortmund players such as Mario Gotze, Robert Lewandowski and Mats Hummels. However, a few months ago the club’s CEO, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, suggested that they will no longer be targeting their rivals’ players.
Pulisic’s father has also played down the chance of a move to Bayern and the player himself indicated over the summer that he does not intend to switch allegiance.
Meanwhile, Dortmund told ESPN FC that they expect Pulisic to be staying with the club over the upcoming international break. The United States, who failed to qualify for next year’s World Cup, have a friendly game against Portugal next week but Dortmund said that Pulisic is not on the release list but did not explain why.
Portugal have also said that they will be without a number of key players for the friendly including Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani.
