The president of Bayern Munich, Uli Hoeness, has said that Renato Sanches should be given another year to prove his worth.

Sanches was the winner of the 2016 Golden Boy award and voted the best young player at Euro 2016. However, he has struggled to meet expectations at Bayern Munich since moving there last summer.

The Portugal international started in just six Bundesliga games and failed to score or provide an assist in 25 appearances for the team. The team legend Lothar Matthaus then declared Sanches to be “one of the flops of the season”.

However, Hoeness has said that there were mitigating circumstances and that the player was unable to prepare well after the European Championship.

Hoeness said that it is a “difficult question because Carlo Ancelotti is also under pressure to deliver success. You cannot demand from the outside that he selects a certain player. Ultimately, the player also has to be good enough. I urge that we try him for another year. He signed a five-year deal so nothing much changes if we try him for another year.”

In other team news, Hoeness said that Douglas Costa could leave the team if a club meets his asking price, reportedly in the region of €40 million.

Costa has been linked with a move to Juventus after he fell down Bayern’s pecking order behind Franck Ribery, Kingsley Coman and Arjen Robben. However, Hoeness said that if no club makes an offer then he will continue to play for Bayern next season.

He also commented on Corentin Tolisso, the club’s signing from Lyon, saying that he is “really looking forward to seeing him play” and added that he doesn’t expect the team to make a bid for Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez.
