The player Olivier Giroud has said that he would be pleased if Jamie Vary were to join Arsenal for next season. Arsenal is free to talk to the Leicester and England forward after triggering a release clause in his contract with a £20 million bid for the player.

Giroud was talking after scoring twice in France’s 3 – 0 win over Scotland on Saturday and he said that he is excited about the idea of playing with Vardy next season. Giroud said that Vardy’s wish to join the team is “very good news” and he said that he thinks “we can be complimentary”.

Giroud was also asked if he thinks Vardy’s arrival would result in a change in formation from Arsene Wenger’s preferred 4-5-1 setup he replied light-heartedly, “Obviously 4-4-2”. He then added, “As I said in the past I am happy with competition. We have always had fantastic strikers at Arsenal and I want the best for this club. Hopefully he is going to help us win this title.”

Vardy signed a new four-year deal with Leicester in February which saw his wages increase to £80,000 per week and at the moment he is preparing with the rest of the England squad for Euro 2016. If he is to make the transfer to Arsenal then he will probably have to be released temporarily by manager Roy Hodgson. Vardy made his England debut last June and has scored three goals for the national side since then.

Vardy had a fantastic 2015-16 season during which he scored 25 goals in all competitions as Leicester claimed a surprise Premier League title with Arsenal finishing 10 points behind in second.

If Arsenal does sign Vardy then it would be Wenger’s second signing of the close season following the acquisition of midfielder Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach.
