Luis Suarez, the Barcelona striker, has said that he thinks there is “no way” that Neymar could move to Real Madrid in the future as he has a great deal of “admiration” for his ex-teammates at Barcelona.
Neymar moved to Paris Saint-Germain from Barcelona for a world-record fee of €222 million over the summer. However, there has been consistent speculation that he and his camp have a longer-term plan to use PSG as a temporary stop-off on the way to Real Madrid as moving directly from Barcelona to Real was not possible.
Sergio Ramos, Madrid’s captain, has welcomed the idea as well as Neymar’s Brazil teammate Casemiro. Furthermore, Neymar’s father has refused to rule out the idea and said last week that it is “too early” to begin talking about whether Neymar would play for Real Madrid at some point during his career.
Suarez was asked by Marca if he could see Neymar moving to Barcelona’s biggest rivals to which he answered, “No way. Sincerely, I don’t see it. I know how Neymar is and the admiration he had for Barcelona and his teammates. I don’t see him now going to play for Real Madrid.”
The last player to make a direct move from Barcelona to Real Madrid was Luis Figo back in 2000. The controversy around his surprise move from one club to its rival led to a direct heightening of tensions between the clubs’ fans.
In the 1990s it was far more common to play for both clubs over the course of a career. Players such as Luis Enrique, Michael Laudrup, Gheorghe Hagi, Robert Prosinecki, Luis Milla, Albert Celades and current Spain boss Julen Lopetegui all spent some time with both teams. .
Tonight Barcelona play Sporting CP in the Champions League while tomorrow Real Madrid will play Borussia Dortmund.
