Luis Suarez said that Barcelona players were surprised to learn that Luis Enrique will step down as head coach this summer.

Enrique, 46, made the announcement on Wednesday after his team defeated Sporting Gijon 6 – 1, saying that he needed to rest.

He has been in charge at Barcelona since May 2014 and is currently in the final year of his contract. Nonetheless, Suarez and his teammates were surprised by the announcement.

Speaking to the team’s official website Suarez said, “It has surprised us a little, we didn’t expect it but it is an understandable decision and one that we accept. The job of coach is very difficult and requires lots of hours of hard work and he has to enjoy being with his family as well.”

Enrique has the chance to leave the team with a trophy treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League. However, the final one is looking unlikely given that they are currently trailing Paris Saint-Germain 4 – 0.

However, Suarez has said that he thinks the team can overcome the deficit when they play at home on Wednesday. He described it as a difficult but not impossible task and said that if they manage “an early goal they [PSG] will get nervous because they know we are capable of doing it.”

He said that the team has the ability to turn any situation around thanks to their skill, desire and ambition, “If we were able to score four in the Bernabeu, why not against PSG at Camp Nou. We have to be positive.”

He added, “What characterises us is that we never give up, we always believe in ourselves, and that has given us the results we needed. At the moment it’s down to us but we are aware that there are a lot of tough games remaining, no opponent is easy.”
